  Now, looking at him, those feelings weren’t going away or disappearing.

  In order to protect the woman he loved, Marcus had to kill him. Antonio had to die.

  Lifting his gun, he stared at the man, knowing he would never get true satisfaction in his death.

  “You can’t kill me, Marcus. I’m the capo. You will be hunted down like a rebellious dog and slaughtered.”

  “No, I won’t. Because I will make sure the family knows what you did to my wife. You think I don’t know these plans of yours go against The Boss? I wonder how much he really knows of what you did to Laura’s parents. Of the manipulation so you control the Davis empire, and your uses for it.” With a single bullet to the head, Marcus watched his father die.

  It was too easy.

  He wanted to bathe in the bastard’s blood, but he was going to have to make do with simply seeing him dead.

  Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his cell phone and dialed The Boss’s number. He was one of the few people who had it, and as he waited, he knew he’d taken a risk with murdering his father.

  For Laura, he would do anything to keep her safe.

  Now, he only had to make sure she knew his feelings were true.

  Chapter Twelve

  Laura paced up and down as she waited for Marcus to return to her. She’d drunk several sweet teas, but still her hands shook.

  The guard was inside the door, guarding her.

  He held a gun within his grasp, his face stern as he watched her pace.

  “Have you heard anything?” Laura asked.

  “Not as yet, Mrs. Giovanni.”

  He hadn’t changed what he spoke in the past three hours. The doctor who had even dared to take her child from her was locked up in the basement, and she couldn’t even hurt him either. They had pulled her away, bringing her into the movie room, and she wouldn’t have been able to focus on the movie. Who could?

  Someone had tried to take her baby from her. She put a hand on her stomach and took a seat. There was no way she would ever forget the feeling of helplessness as the men held her down.

  Rosa, poor Rosa, was gone, and there was no way she could even thank her for everything. This night had been one of the worst.

  She didn’t even see marrying Marcus as one of the worst moments. She didn’t hate him, not anymore. If she ever did, she couldn’t remember the feeling. Well, she could remember the feeling, but now it seemed so stupid. Marcus hadn’t deserved the hatred she’d given him since they’d been married, or even before.

  Tears filled her eyes as she watched the clock. He had to come back to her. There was no way she could live with herself if something was to have happened to him. So much time had been wasted on petty arguments, and all because she’d not been able to overcome her problems and her feelings.

  Marcus could be killed.

  No, she wouldn’t believe that.

  I need to apologize. To make up for all the horrible things I said to him. He never hurt my mom, but I made out it was him. Like he had a choice but he was a child.

  She gasped, pacing the room still.

  “Any news?”

  The guard said the same thing.

  I’m not going to waste another moment.

  She went back to staring at the clock, hoping to get another chance. It wouldn’t make him return to her any faster, but she felt sick to her stomach.

  He had to come back to her.

  There was no way she could do this without him. She’d make so many changes. He wasn’t a bully or a monster. He was her husband. The man she loved more than anything in the world.

  The door to the sitting room opened, and in walked the man himself. Laura got to her feet and rushed toward him.

  Not caring about how big her stomach was, she threw herself into his arms, holding onto him.

  “Tell me everything is going to be okay. We’re going to be fine and nothing is going to go wrong.”

  He held her tightly, his large hands running down her body, cupping her ass before moving up toward her shoulders once again, and gripping them. He moved her back so she had no choice but to look him in the eye.

  “Marcus, what is wrong?”

  “Leave us,” he said, without breaking eye contact.

  Her heart was racing now as all the possibilities rushed through her head.

  “What is going on?”

  Once they were in the room, he cupped her face, and slammed his lips down on hers. “There is no way I want to live in this world without you. I don’t know what you did to me, Laura, but I can’t do it.”

  “What can’t you do?”

  “Live without you. I fucking love you, and there’s no way I’m ever going to leave you, or let you go.”

  “You love me?”

  “Yes. So fucking much it hurts.”

  “I love you too.” Tears fell down her face, and she kissed him back. “I didn’t expect to love you. I mean, for the longest time I thought I hated you, but it’s not true. There is no way I could ever hate you. I love you so much.”

  He kissed her hard, cupping her ass as he pulled her close.

  She felt the evidence of his arousal digging into her hip, but she didn’t care. All that mattered to her was being with this man, the love of her life, for the rest of theirs.

  “I love you,” he said. “And I’m going to make sure no one will ever harm you again.”

  “But, what about your dad? He’s going to come back. You know he is. He doesn’t want me to have a baby girl.”

  Marcus went to his knees, pressing his face against her stomach.

  “He is already dead.”

  “Marcus? What does this mean? Are you safe?”

  “Yes, I’m safe. As safe as can be expected.”

  “Will they hunt you down? What is going to happen?”

  “I went to The Boss.”

  She gasped. “You spoke to him? Does he know the truth?”

  “He knows the truth and understood what needed to be done. I will be given the city tomorrow. He will announce me as the new capo, and I will take over the role from my father. You will always be safe, and I will take steps to ensure your safety. You will never fear for your life or our baby’s, never again. I swear to you.” He took her hands in his. “There is something I want to talk to you about.”

  “What is it?”

  “You. Me. This life. It’s not going to be easy. I won’t be a good guy, Laura. I will be a monster. There is no going back from this life, only forward.”

  “I know what you mean. I’m not blind to what happens now.”

  “I’m giving you a chance to leave.”

  “What?”

  “If you want a fresh life. One away from this world, and to have your own life, I will not hold it against you. I want you to be free and to be happy. But you only have this one chance.”

  “So long as I’ve got you in my life, I don’t care about anything else. I love you, Marcus. I didn’t think I ever would, but I do, more than anything.” She sank to her knees, albeit rather clumsily. They both chuckled as he helped her. “I will stay by your side through thick and thin. Your father did get something right by bringing us together, and this is where I’ll stay.”

  “Last chance.”

  “No, I’m not going anywhere. I didn’t pick you, but we were always supposed to be together.”

  “I know,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about our past. How our lives, against all odds, melded together. You were always supposed to belong to me, and now, I won’t be giving you back, Laura. You will be mine, and I want to have a family with you. To raise our children in a loving home and to give them what I never had.” He kissed her again. “When I get home, I’m going to show you just how much I love you, and worship every single part of your body.”

  “Where are you going?” she asked, happier than she had ever been in her life.

  “I’ve got to go and give a boss a doctor.”

  Epilogue

  Five years later
r />   Being the capo of the city was one of Marcus’s dreams. He knew he would take over from his father, and finally rule the way he always wanted. Never did he anticipate killing his father or having a wife and three children as he accomplished this. He would have laughed in anyone’s face who said not only would he be capo with a wife and three children, but he’d love her more than anything in the world.

  Standing in his office, he looked out of the window and watched as Laura chased after their children.

  Little Liam was sitting in his chair, slapping his hands onto the small table keeping him in place, laughing.

  Their daughter Emily, with her brown hair cascading around her, ran from her mother but kept stopping, giggling as Laura pretended to fall down.

  Then of course there was little Lizzie, Elizabeth, who was his second child. He’d been present for all the births, and when Laura was pregnant again, he’d be with her for as many as they would have.

  Watching her in pain was not something he enjoyed, but the highlight was seeing the happiness in her eyes when their babies had been handed to her. There was no greater feeling than watching the woman he loved being happy.

  She stood up and looked toward him. He held his hand up, and she called to him, the dress she wore flowing around her ankles.

  No matter how many of the other capos’ women tried to tame her, or control her, Laura always set her own standard as his wife. She refused to be pushed around, and would never dress the part of his wife. It was one of the many things he loved about her. He also knew The Boss respected her for it. She was a woman several of the men admired because she didn’t turn away from his life, but embraced him.

  Leaving his office, he locked the door and headed out to be with his family. In a few days’ time they would be hosting a huge gathering and their children would be living elsewhere while the party was in full swing. They would join them later, and he intended to take them on vacation.

  Running up to his wife, he pulled her into his arms and swung her around. His girls and son cheered.

  “I love you,” he said.

  “And I love you.”

  Emily and Lizzie started to play around Liam, making him laugh and giggle.

  “I’ve spoiled the fun,” he said.

  “No, you haven’t.” She took his hand and placed it on her stomach. “They both know I wanted to tell you, and promised to keep Liam happy while I did.”

  “You’re pregnant again?” he asked, cupping her stomach.

  She giggled. “Yes. It’s not hard to do. You don’t keep your hands off me. Are you upset?”

  “At having another reason to keep you by my side? Never.” He was filled with happiness. “I want you barefoot and pregnant, and it’s exactly what I’m going to get.” He kissed her hard, letting her know through his touch, exactly how happy he was to be with her. She was his everything, and he wasn’t going to turn his back, or let her go.

  He’d given her the choice five years ago. He would never give it to her again, and he was going to make sure she knew just how much she was loved.

  Lifting up Liam, he started to chase his woman and girls around.

  The sounds of laughter filled the garden, just how he knew it would be, and how he planned to constantly keep it.

  Chloe Decker sat on the park bench outside of school, waiting for her father to pick her up. She didn’t know why she bothered waiting for him. It wasn’t like he ever showed up on time. More often than not, he forgot, but that’s what she got all the time from her dad. Her father, Kurt, was none other than a Satan’s Crew MC lackey. They would never give him prospect status. Whenever she was near any of the MC club members, she always heard the lingering insults of “coward” thrown his way.

  She tried hard to spend as little time as possible around the club. It helped that her mother didn’t like it and would often avoid the family gatherings her father kept trying to pull them into.

  “Look at it, if it’s not fatty Chloe sitting on the bench. I bet the wood will bend and snap.”

  Chloe stared down at her book. She didn’t need to look up to see it was Alfie Pace and his other MC brat goonies who were near her. They liked to take their time making her life a misery, and she had no doubt it was because of who her father was.

  Ignoring them was easy. Most of the time they moved on, but not today.

  Today she had a banana skin thrown at her, and she groaned, getting off the bench. She didn’t need to wait for her dad. He was supposed to be taking her out to get new boots, but she’d rather walk home than have to put up with this kind of crap.

  “What’s the matter, fatty? Don’t want to eat it? Shouldn’t a fatty eat everything that’s thrown at her?”

  Forcing herself to look up, she stared into Alfie’s sharp blue eyes. She hated this guy more than anything else in the world. For as long as she could remember, he’d been mean to her. He never had a nice thing to say to her, and part of her often wondered if he thought he was better than she was.

  His father, Eagle, was the president of the Satan’s Crew MC, and he was a merciless bastard. She’d seen him hit his son a few times. One of the first times she saw Alfie, he’d been thrown across his father’s knee and spanked so hard. He’d screamed the clubhouse down until he finally apologized for whatever misdemeanor he’d done.

  When she’d asked her father later that night what could have possibly earned such a harsh punishment, she’d been told “club stuff.”

  Which probably meant her father didn’t have a clue what was going on either, but he liked to pretend he had a place.

  She didn’t say anything, but she’d have to pass them to make her way home. The last thing she wanted to do was get anywhere near those guys.

  There was no way she was going to be able to avoid it.

  Heart racing, she stepped on the path and began to walk toward them.

  “Whoa, be careful, the ground is shaking,” Ian said.

  “Look at everything wobble while she moves. Be careful. She’s going to eat you,” Riley said.

  There were only two other guys with Alfie, so she should really count herself lucky.

  When she was only a couple of steps away from him, she stopped.

  “Seriously? That’s all you got? You’re going to bully me on my weight or how about my looks next? You think I haven’t heard this all before? You guys are pathetic,” she said.

  She spent way too much time trying to get along, pretending they weren’t horrible people, but she was done being nice.

  She was done being the girl that allowed them to get away with shit. Tonight was the last night she ever trusted her father to actually pick her up and take her to get boots. Once her mother heard what happened, there would be fucking hell to pay, but until then, Chloe was pissed off, angry, and just wanted someone to scream at.

  Why go and throw herself on her bed and allow the pillow to take the blame when she had three men standing right in front of her? They weren’t men.

  Throwing her bag to the ground, she let her book fall on top of it and stared straight at the men. Her hands shook with rage, and she felt a sickness in the back of her throat as if she wanted to throw up, but she didn’t back down.

  “Go on. What else have you got to throw at me? Or better yet, why not use me
as a punching bag? I hear dickless assholes like to do that, so you must be all for punching a girl. How about it, Ian?”

  “What the fuck?” Ian asked.

  She had always taken their shit without causing any waves. Sure, they’d thrown her into her lockers, or shoved her over desks, or even tripped her.

  All the bullying bullshit they liked to do, she’d taken.

  She’d even had the tampons fall out of her locker, and it was all courtesy of a club whore spilling the details of Chloe’s first period. Alfie had taken it upon himself to let the whole school know she was menstruating.

  Never in all of her life had she been so embarrassed. She’d never trusted the club whore again, and in fact, unless it was with her own mother, she never spoke to anyone. At the earliest opportunity she wanted out of Satan’s Croft, living far away from any small town or MC.

  She had a life plan, and this place wasn’t part of it. Her mother, who she loved more than anything, loved her and had told her to fly. To find her dream, and just go for it. To never look back and allow anyone to take her dreams from her.

  “You’re fucking crazy,” Ian said.

  “I am, or maybe I’m sick and tired of the same old shit. ‘Chloe’s fat. Look the earth is moving because she’s so fucking fat it has to move’!” She yelled the last words, tired of the same old bullshit.

  These boys, they were not men. To even call them men was an insult to the opposite sex.

  She also wouldn’t ever trust her dad again. Not ever. This was the last time he humiliated her.

  She wouldn’t put it past him to actually be having a drink with Eagle, or trying to work his way into the good graces of the club. That was the kind of man he was. He’d fucked up years ago, and rather than accept it, he did nothing but try to get back into the club by any means possible. The truth was, no one was ever going to accept him. They didn’t want him back because he was a total fuck up.
