  “Consider this my last contract.”

  “You’d do that?”

  Chapter Eight

  Allegra woke to the sound of breaking glass. Viktor lurched awake next to her in the same moment, alert and listening for more.

  “Get dressed.”

  “What’s happening?”

  Viktor quickly turned on the screen and hit a button on his tablet. Immediately, the screen split into half a dozen different views of the house. Allegra scanned to try to spot the intruder.

  “There.” She pointed at the image in the middle of the top row. A figure crept through the kitchen with a gun drawn.

  “And there.” Viktor pointed to three more. One in the living room and two more in the room below.

  He turned to press a button under the rim of his desk, revealing a hidden compartment on his wall. And the weapons that were concealed within. He immediately started arming himself. Guns and knives of every size were quickly hidden under his clothing. As well as many other devices she didn’t recognize.

  Allegra’s eyes widened. “You’re not actually thinking about going out there alone, are you?”

  “I won’t be alone.” He nodded at his desk. “The top drawer.”

  She pulled it open to find an earpiece.

  She picked it up, but didn’t put it on. “I’d rather have a gun since I’m coming with you.”

  Viktor gave her an admiring smile, but shook his head. “Here’s the safest spot for you. Besides. I need you to be my eyes.” He nodded pointedly at the screen as he put on a twin to the earpiece she held.

  “Okay.” She put hers on. “I’d still rather be out there with you, though.”

  He kissed her again. “I’ll work better knowing that you’re safe.”

  Allegra gripped his head to peer into his eyes. “Come back to me, okay?”

  He winked before creeping to the door. “Lock it behind me.”

  Nodding, she watched as he crept out. She quickly locked it behind him before dashing back to the screen.

  “Where’s the closest one?” Viktor’s voice came through clear.

  Allegra did a quick scan. “To your right. He’s just inside the door to the library.”

  She held her breath as Viktor moved closer to his target. He quickly dispatched the man and dragged his body into the library and closed the door to hide him.

  “One is headed your way. On the stairs.”

  Viktor darted around like a wraith in the darkness. He moved so quickly she wasn’t even sure how she managed to take out the man on the stairs. Only that he was gone in the blink of an eye.


  “There. Living room. Two more. One at the balcony door and the other heading into the hall.”

  Viktor’s breathing was steady and comforted her as she watched him incapacitate the intruders one by one. The man was an expert at what he did, that was for sure. Allegra found herself admiring him for it.

  “That’s all I can see.”

  “Get the tablet and tap the arrow to the right.”

  She did and quickly learned to scroll through the many cameras on the grounds inside and out. “I don’t see any more.”

  “Good. Sit tight. I’m coming back to you.”

  Allegra headed to the door and deactivated the locks, opening it just as Viktor ran up to it. Heaving a sigh of relief, she opened her arms to him.

  Viktor’s smile turned into astonishment at the same time a blast rang out. He lurched forward into her arms with a groan.

  “Viktor!” Allegra caught his large form the best she could, but crumpled under his weight.

  What scared her more than the fact that Viktor had been shot, was that behind him stood Enrico with a feral smile on his face and a gun levelled at hers.

  “My darling wife.”

  “You don’t get to call me that.” She spat with more venom than she felt. Fear suffused her system at the blood stain growing on Viktor’s back.

  Enrico continued as if she hadn’t spoken. “Imagine my surprise when there were whisperings from my little informants that the hitman that I had hired to dispose of my wife suddenly had a mysterious woman living with him. One that apparently looks exactly like my dead wife.”

Enrico wrenched her hair until she had no alternative but to let go. “Have you two been planning his long?”
