The Boss's Pet Read online

  “Will you go ahead to my office?” Drake asked.

  “Sure.”

  She smiled at the gentlemen wishing them well. Entering Drake’s office, she fired up the computer.

  “So, it’s official then.”

  Looking up she saw George enter the office.

  “What?” she asked.

  “You and Drake? An item.”

  “We’re together. That’s all you need to know.” She typed in his password to access Drake’s computer, firing it up just the way he liked.

  Where are you, Drake?

  He’d told her to never be alone with George, and this was the first time for her.

  “You know, I’ve found it impossible to get you alone.”

  “Drake doesn’t believe we’ve got anything to say to each other. You clearly don’t approve of him dating me.” She made sure to stay behind the desk, keeping a good distance between them.

  “He worries for the wrong reasons. I have to say I never took him for a chubby chaser, but then, it’s true what they say that you never really know a person.”

  Christy tensed up but didn’t say anything to him.

  “You know, Drake and I, we used to share women. He loved getting a woman to submit to us.”

  Nauseous, she didn’t say or do anything. The thought of the man in front of her touching her made her sick to her stomach. She was attracted to Drake; she loved him. George, he filled her with disgust and loathing.

  “When I saw you I was a little less thrilled. I don’t like my women to jiggle.”

  “Get the fuck out of my office,” Drake said.

  Neither of them had heard him enter. Glancing toward Drake, she saw the anger shining in his eyes.

  “Drake, so pleased you could join. I was just updating Christy here.”

  “Get out. There’s nothing going on, and you’ll never lay a finger on her. I’ll be in touch. You working for me is never going to work.”

  “You’re going to put her before our friendship?”

  “We don’t have a friendship. She’s more important than you’ll ever be. You don’t even deserve to breathe the same air as she does.” Drake stepped up close to George. “I suggest you leave now.”

  “I can’t believe you’ll put her before us.”

  “Get out now.”

  Drake didn’t step down, glaring at the man. Christy didn’t know what to think or do. She loved a man who shared women with his best friend.

  He stuck up for me.

  It was no use. They were too different, and there was no way they could work now. One day in the office with people talking was too much.

  “I’ve got to go,” Christy said.

  Drake knew this was going to happen. When he noticed George had slipped away it was to cause trouble. Listening to what George said, there was no way it wouldn’t affect their relationship.

  “No, you can’t go, Christy. I told you to not be alone with him.”

  “I didn’t exactly go searching for him. He came to me.”

  “I know, baby.” He walked toward her, happy when she didn’t try to walk away from him. “You can’t listen to a word he says.”

  “Was it lies?”

  “What?”

  “Lies. Everything he said, was it lies?”

  Drake cupped her cheeks, dropping a kiss to her lips. “Ignore it.”

  “You’ve shared your women with him before, haven’t you?”

  “It was a long time ago.”

  She chuckled. “Wow, he was right. I’m the wrong woman for you. There’s no way it could work for us. I mean, I could never give myself to a man who’d share.”

  “No, you’ve got it all wrong, Christy. I wouldn’t dream of sharing you.” The truth was, he couldn’t. The thought of any man trying to touch her filled him with such rage that he didn’t know how to keep it locked in.

  “We’re worlds apart, Drake. Did you see the way they were talking about us?” she asked.

  “I don’t care about that. I’ve never cared about shit like that, and you shouldn’t either.”

  “They’re going to think I slept my way to the top. That I’ve been manipulating you.”

  Drake chuckled. “You really don’t give me a lot of credit, do you?”

  “I’m sorry, Drake. This was a mistake.” She pulled away from him. “I want to go home.”

  “You’re not leaving this office until we figure this out.”

  “I’ve got to. I can’t handle this. It’s too much.”

  “What? Being with me or other people looking at you?”

  Tears shone in her eyes, and the sight broke his heart. He didn’t want her to be upset by them being together.

  “I never planned for this.”

  “You think I did, Christy? Do you think I planned to fuck my PA, let alone fall in love with her?”

  “What did you say?”

  “That I’ve fallen in love with you. Big shock, baby, because I have. I’ve fallen in love with you. I don’t care what other people think. They can look at us all they want. The only person I want or care about is staring right back at me.”

  “You don’t mean that.”

  “Do not think to tell me what I’m feeling.” He took a step toward her. “We’re good together. I’ve never had this connection with anyone. Do you know I wake up in the middle of the night just to watch you sleep?” He chuckled. “It’s crazy, huh? I like to see how peaceful you are. Falling to sleep with you in my arms is the best feeling in the world.”

  “Drake, stop.”

  “No. I’m not going to stop. You’re prepared to walk away from me, fine, walk away. When you go, you’re going to go with all the facts. From the first moment we met I was enthralled by you. I put it down to our first meeting and how you didn’t take any shit from me, but I can’t guarantee it. Then we got busy, working. We worked well together, and I couldn’t do squat about it because you were my employee.” He ran fingers through his hair, pacing in front of her. “Then there was that night. The night that changed everything for both of us. We fucked, and it was magical. I thought it was just because you were different. You didn’t bow down to please me. I had to fight you every chance I got. Then we were together again, and again, and a-fucking-gain. Every chance I got, I wanted more.”

  “I don’t know what you want from me.”

  “To admit you feel the same.”

  “We’re too different.”

  “To the outside world we are. In here where it matters, we’re the same. You’re just too afraid to admit it. You can give up all you want, Christy. Run away, but I want to warn you, I’m not going to let you go for long.”

  He watched the indecision in her eyes.

  “I need to think.”

  “I’ll give you tonight. Tomorrow, I’m coming for you.”

  She bit her lip, which he’d noticed she did a lot when she was nervous.

  Drake watched her walk toward the door. She hesitated, holding onto the door as if it was a lifeline.

  “What?” he asked.

  “I love you, too.”

  “Then why are you making this difficult?”

  “I don’t know if I can handle this.”

  Her tears were spilling from her eyes, breaking his heart as the fell. A lump had started in his own throat. It was killing a part of him to see her walking away, but hope filled him as she stood uncertain.

  “I can handle everything with you at my side. I’m not going to regret this, Christy.”

  “Do you really think we can survive this? You’ve got the attention span of a fish.”

  He laughed. “I broke my fish tendencies with you. You moved in with me. You share half my wardrobe. I spent Christmas and New Year with you, and I even bought you a Valentine’s gift. I’ve changed. Believe in me. Believe in us, and come back here and kiss me.”

  “I couldn’t handle the humiliation.”

  “Do you love me?”

  “Yes.”

  “And I l
ove you. Don’t think of anything else. I’m not going to give you a chance of falling out of love with me.” He stayed in his place, watching her. “Come here and kiss me. We’ll take the world on together.”

  She looked out at the office then back at him. “No more sharing.”

  “George is not coming near you or my business. I’m too damn possessive of you to allow it.”

  Christy released the door and turned toward him. She ran at him, wrapping her arms around his neck as he laid claim to her lush lips.

  “I love you, Christy, and I’m not going to let you regret being with me.”

  “I’m so sorry. I got scared for a second there.”

  “I think I can handle your fear having a five second memory.” Drake held her tight against him. He’d never been so afraid of losing something before in his life. Christy meant too much to him to let her go.

  “What happens now?” she asked, pulling away.

  “I think it would only make sense that you make an honest man out of me.”

  “What?”

  “Miss Bell, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

  “You really know how to surprise.”

  “I’ve had a lot of practice.” He stroked her cheek. “I’m being serious, Christy. Marry me.”

  “Are you sure? It’s quite a commitment.”

  “I’ll get to spend all day with my wife bossing her around. I think it’s perfect.”

  “Like being your pet?”

  “The boss’s pet. I like that. I might get a sign for your desk.”

  “You wouldn’t dare.”

  He silenced her with his lips. “When it comes to you, I’d dare about everything.”

  “Why do I love you?”

  Drake chuckled. “Come on. Let’s go home before we cause a scandal here.”

  “I think we’ve already caused a big one.”

  “They’ve seen nothing yet.”

  Epilogue

  One year later

  “Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Brennan, it’s a boy.”

  Drake stared at the midwife as she held out their son. Christy had been in labor for the last four hours. He didn’t know how he survived listening to the love of his life scream and cry out in agony.

  “Oh, Drake, look. He’s so beautiful.”

  His son was placed in Christy’s arms. Stroking her hair, he wrapped his arms around his woman. He loved his son instantly, but nothing compared to the love he had for his woman.

  “We did good, baby.”

  “We did good? I did all the work.” She looked up at him smiling.

  The last year had been a dream where they both proved their audience wrong. The papers went from counting down the days until they broke up to counting the days until their wedding. He wouldn’t allow any of the media near his wedding. It was a simple ceremony for the pair of them. Her friend Sandra attended, and he’d allowed some business associates. George, though, was out of the picture and out of his life.

  “You did the work, and I can’t believe how you did it.” He kissed her temple before stroking their son’s cheek.

  “He’s perfect.” She kissed their son’s head, holding him close to her heart.

  He never could have believed that married life could be this perfect. Christy completed him. Waking up next to her every morning was a dream come true, and going to bed with her in his arms was worth every nasty headline or bad business meeting.

  “I love you, Christy Brennan.”

  “Not as much as I love you, Drake Brennan.”

  They were a year into marriage. He couldn’t wait to have fifty years of memories with the woman he loved.
